Ēadgār (Old English). Edgar was the name of a 10th-century English king, Edgar the Peaceful. The name largely disappeared from English use after the Norman Conquest, then was revived in the 18th century, aided by Walter Scott's 1819 novel 'The Bride of Lammermoor,' which features a character named Edgar Ravenswood.
