Jaxon

Jaxon belongs to a documented, quantified American "x-substitution" naming trend, not just an informally observed cluster of similar-sounding names. Laura Wattenberg's Namerology ("The Many Faces of X," July 2021) tracks X standing in for "ck" (as in Jaxson), "z" (Xachary), "k" (Alexsander), and "ks" (Banx), and reports that names containing X have grown roughly sevenfold over the past 25 years -- a rise that began around 1980 and accelerated sharply after 2000. Wattenberg's own numbers show that at the turn of the millennium roughly 9 boys were named the traditional "Jackson" for every 1 who received an X-spelling (Jaxon/Jaxson/Jaxxon), but the X-spellings have since overtaken the classic "ck" spelling in combined volume, with Jaxon itself now the dominant single X-spelling. Wattenberg links the letter's appeal to cultural associations built up through the X-Men film franchise and the X Games, which gave "X" a "bold, renegade" connotation for parents who "liked the idea of pushing limits"; the broader X-substitution trend is also heavily gendered, with the most extreme X-substitutions (XX/XZ clusters) skewing about 25:1 male, indicating this is overwhelmingly a boys'-name phenomenon rather than a general spelling fashion.
