ORIGIN & HISTORY

About the name

Gift of God, from Greek theos ('god') + doron ('gift').

  1. Θεοδώρα (Theodora, Greek). Theodora (c. 490/500-548 CE) rose from humble origins as the daughter of a circus keeper, working as an actress and courtesan before marrying the future Emperor Justinian I following a change in Byzantine law (after Empress Euphemia's death in 524) that allowed senators to marry former prostitutes. As empress from 527 until her death, she wielded significant political influence — Justinian called her his 'partner in my deliberations' — most famously urging him to stand firm during the Nika riots of 532 with the words 'royal purple is the noblest shroud', which helped preserve his rule. She championed Miaphysite Christians despite Justinian's own Chalcedonian allegiance, worked to close brothels and establish convents for former sex workers, and co-commissioned major building projects including the Hagia Sophia.
