ORIGIN & HISTORY

About the name

Tiffany is the English form of the Greek name Theophania ("manifestation of God"), passed down through Old French Tifinie/Tiphanie and Medieval Latin Theophania. It was historically given to children born on the feast of Theophania (Epiphany, January 6). The name fell out of common use after the Middle Ages before being revived in the 20th century, when its modern popularity became tied not to its religious origin but to the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany's (referencing the Tiffany & Co. jewelry company) and, later, the 1971 James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever.

  1. Theophania (Medieval Latin, from Greek). "Manifestation of God" or "appearance of God" — English form of the Greek name Theophania (theos "god" + phainein "to appear, shine"), traditionally given to children born on the feast of Theophania (Epiphany, January 6). Historically given to children (originally of either sex; the equivalent male form is Theophanes) born on the feast of Theophania/Epiphany. The name fell out of common use after the Middle Ages and was later revived. It was especially popular in the United States from the 1970s to the early 1990s, with more than 10,000 girls named Tiffany each year between 1980 and 1991, peaking at 18,361 in 1988.
  2. Mythological and religious contextDerived from Theophania, the Greek name for the Christian feast of Epiphany (commemorating the visit of the Magi to the infant Jesus), and historically given to children born on that feast day.
